Stoney Creek Charter Branch Women's Institute Minutes 1897-1959

The Erland Lee Museum is the "birthplace" of an important national and international movement for rural and farm women. The 1897 constitution of the first Women's Institute was drafted in the house which was the home of the organization's co-founders and leaders, Janet and Erland Lee. In many rural communities, Women's Institutes have enabled women in the rural population to break free from their isolation and improve their living conditions by building libraries and community centers.

The minute books of the Stoney Creek Charter Branch WI have been digitized, thanks to a grant from the federal Museum Assistance Program (Department of Canadian Heritage) and a donation from ZONTA Club of Hamilton II . The minutes, which cover a span from 1897-1944 and 1948 -1959, are presented here for researchers interested in the early Women's Institutes movement. No records for 1944-1948 are available. Post 1959 records will be scanned in the future.

Over 2100 pages of material is available for examination, including financial records.
